SHORTCODE: STOPH8

A textable reporting tool gives power back to the hate incident victims and their defenders

THE OPPORTUNITY

  • Deploying a proper technology solution with the spotlight of #StopAAPIHate that can achieve public good while also increasing awareness for non-AANHPIs to be allies.

THE CHALLENGE

  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, reported anti-AANHPIs hate incidents have risen 149% with many more suspected to be unreported.

  • Cultural beliefs, limited English proficiency, and a gap between reporting options and local officials inhibit tracking and response.

  • Current emergency tools and reporting solutions lack immediacy, ease, and accessibility—the only existing avenues are to call 911, fill out online forms, or write about it on social media.

THE SOLUTION

  • Creating an accessible reporting platform that would properly assess the true scale of this problem as well as provide adequate data, resources, and solutions to victims, allies, and public officials.

    • Offering a tool easily accessed from any cell phone without requiring internet service.

    • A reporting process (texting) that is familiar to use for those with less technological familiarity.

    • Providing in-language support to victims and allies.

    • Sharing data in order to create a “one-stop shop” for public figures and public policy organizations to get more accurate data representation and understanding of the issue.
